Renaissance Serving Wench Peasant Women Costume Dresses
Serving wench dresses worn by the common class or peasant women of the middle ages were made of simple fabrics with very little adornment or embellishments as they were not affordable by the commoners. Richly embroidered dresses were only for middle-class and upper-class women of higher ranking nobility.
A wench is a nice word for a lady who may or may not be so nice – it gives you license to behave badly in a bawdiest, randy way while serving that tankard of ale! On the other hand, a serving wench was also a peasant milkmaid, a cook, a kitchen scullery maid, a servant in a Lord’s castle or the wife of a peasant farmer.
This lovely Blue Peasant Overdress, featured on the left, gives the look of a Medieval serving wench. The front open design and drawstring make it easy to wear and the curved hem makes the under chemise an essential part of the look. Back lacings on the dress give the adjustability for a smooth fit. The chemise is not included but may be purchased separately. I found the perfect one to wear under this blue peasant over-dress here.

Table of Contents
During the Medieval period into the Renaissance Era, clothing for servants and members of the lower classes were loosely fitted to provide ease of movement while doing daily chores. The overdress usually had adjustable lacings so that the dress could expand through pregnancy or be fitted tighter when not. The peasant overdress was often just a tunic, or surcoat, which was open on each side and worn over a chemise. It was usually made of linen and belted at the waist with a cloth or leather belt. As fashion changed moving into the Renaissance the dressing for both the aristocrats and the lower class became more elaborate. Peasant and working women wore an overdress on top of a chemise dress, tunic or blouse.

These overdresses are designed after dresses worn in the Middle Ages which are worn over full sleeved long chermise smocks. The chermises are not included but may be purchased separately at Medieval and Renaissance Lady Undergarments. The simple peasant dresses lace up at the front bodice which is re-enforced with bone for a better fit. I like having an alternative color chemise to wear with these types of overdresses. Check out a gold brocade chemise as an alternative to the white ones.

A super cute chemise and overdress set replicated from an Irish style Renaissance overdress. The full length chemise has an elastic neckline which can be worn on the shoulders or off for a sexier tavern serving wench look. The sleeves are also elastic giving the chemise a puffed sleeve. Even though the elastic is not historically accurate, the costume set is perfect for a Renaissance Faire, a Pirate Fest, an Irish or Scottish Fest, or a Halloween costume.
There are 20 different color combinations to choose from so I’m sure you will find a color that’s right for you. The overdress has laces on both the front and the back which can be cinched for a better fit.

Deluxe Women’s Tavern Wench 4-Piece Theatre CostumeClick Here for Details
A gorgeous deluxe fantasy costume which can be used over and over for different characters just by changing the accessories. Examples that come to mind are Tavern Wench, Huntswoman, Gypsy Queen, Steampunk Traveler, or Pirate Wench. It could even by a Renaissance lady’s traveling outfit just by adding a coordinating hooded cloak. The gown is designed with a faux leather corset bodice with gold-tone applique designs down the front and adjustable laces in the back that can be cinched to fit you perfectly. The creamy satin poet sleeves are two separate pieces with a large ruffle at the wrist and is elastisized in 3 places to achieve the romantic fantasy look.
The gorgeous skirt is one-piece designed to look like two pieces; an underskirt with a split overlay. The stylish skirt is gold satin gathered and sewn into 3-tier balloon poofs. The front panel insert is designed with a rich, dark brown, ribbon appliqued over cream, copper, and gold satin fabric in a diamond-shaped pattern. I would purchase a hoop skirt or a crinoline to wear underneath. It will give the skirt the additional fullness you see in the image.
Women’s Deluxe Renaissance Red Lace-Up 3-Piece Embroidered Trim Long Bell Sleeves Dress Costume Set
The perfect outfit for the lady of the manor to wear as a casual day dress. The top and skirt are made from a beautiful red-on-red floral fabric and is trimmed in decorative cross-stitched trim. The cotton shirt has lace trimmed ruffled cuffs. The belt and the ale mug are not included.

Add a wide brim straw hat, a shawl, and a basket to play the part of a young maid out for a walk to the market. Or you can dress as a bawdy tavern wench serving grog to all the pirates in port drinking at the ale shoppe. Just shove your hair into a medieval snood, add a skirt overlayer, a chain belt with an empty ale cup attached, and bangle bracelets for jewelry.
A beautifully made cosplay Renaissance costume perfect to wear to a LARP, a Renaissance Fest or a Cosplay event. If you can’t find the right size measurements, you can choose a custom made to order costume. Included is a quality-made full skirt, a white chemise top, and a velvet underbust lace up corset.
The white chemise top has gathered elastic sleeves, an elastic neckline, which can be worn on or off the shoulders, and an elastic waistline for a closer fit under the skirt and corset.
The full gathered skirt has an elastic waistline for comfort and a contrasting front panel. I recommend wearing a petticoat underneath for extra fullness.

Women’s Renaissance Faire 3-Piece Wench Costume Dress
Renaissance Faire 3-Piece Wench Costume DressClick Here for Details
This is a fabulous 3-piece Renaissance wench costume handmade by Artemisia Designs that can be used for several different Renaissance fantasy costumes. Be it a serving wench, a pirate wench, a lady’s maid or a country squire’s milkmaid, this costume can be changed just by changing the accessories. Included with this costume is a white hip-length, poly-cotton chemise with long, full, puffy sleeves and elastic gathered wrists and neckline. It is your choice to wear it on or off the shoulds, depending on the look you wish to achieve; a bawdy, randy pub wench or a demure lady’s maid.
We think the best feature of this costume is the full-torso, black and red paneled bodice. It is fully lined with vertical boning in front and back for additional support. The bodice laces up the front and at the shoulders with ribbons to better adjust a custom fit. The long, full black skirt has a bell-shaped cut. I would wear a crinoline slip underneath to give body and additional fullness to the skirt.

Medieval Renaissance Peasant
Serving Wench Dresses
I am featuring a wonderful variety of Renaissance peasant dresses that will suit different lower-class professions from that era. They are not dresses that would have been worn by royalty or nobles, but a few of the theater quality dresses would have been worn by the serving women of noble houses, or the Royal family.

If you’re looking for a serving wench peasant costume cool enough to wear to a Renaissance or Pirate Fair during the summer then these dresses are the perfect choice for you. They come in 8 different colors for you to choose from. The dresses are a thin cotton gauze fabric and are ideal for all day wear in the hot summer sun. Wear the tunic dress alone with sandals, pair with leggings and Medieval-style boots, or layered over another gauze skirt worn with either sandals or Medieval shoes.

This costume is not made as elaborately as the other costumes on this page, nor is it historically accurate, but it is a fun costume to wear to a Ren Fest or a Halloween party and it is very inexpensive. It is a thin polyester, ready-made, off the rack sort of costume by Leg Avenue, but it is cute and with the right accessories added it is a fun, uncomplicated outfit to wear. Included with this costume is the headpiece, the burgundy dress, the creamy tan apron over skirt and the green bodice with front lacings.

A light-weight gauze Renaissance tavern wench peasant costume with a blue velvet bodice and a floral headpiece. A super cute costume you can wear to blend right in at the fair. I would get a different headpiece to wear (the one they send is junk) along with a leather belt and a tankard holder to add to the costume.

Anyone of these smocked waist dresses can be worn like a chemise under an overdress. They are very light and airy making them the perfect solution to a hot summer day, if worn alone. If you do choose to wear one alone, I recommend adding a laced bodice, a corset, or a waist cincher. The waist cincher will add color and another layer of interest to the dress.
Another idea is to use a white, gold, or silver corset along with a floral headband for a summer Renaissance wedding dress. Because the fabric is so thin, you will need to wear a cotton slip underneath them.
