Ahoy thar me beauties! Here at DeluxeAdultCostumes.com, I am featuring a wide variety of high-quality pirate skirts and gypsy skirts to suit the most discernable women pirates.
I have found the pirate skirt and gypsy skirt styles which were worn from the 15th to the 18th century by all varieties of women. From the pirate tavern wench to the pirate gypsy fortune teller (and everything in between) including fantasy pirate skirts for the Pirate Queen. Featuring both lightweight summer skirts and heavier fabric skirts for cooler seasons.
I have selected fun, yet practical, skirt overlays which were a big part of the fashion styles during these historical periods. Additionally, I have skirts which can be converted into pants. This type of convertible skirt was worn by women pirates who were forced to pass as men to the superstitious all-male crews.
These pirate skirts and gypsy skirts are for the crafty semi-homemade type of woman who has a creative side and enjoys creating her own fashion style. They are for any woman who has a knack for putting an outfit together cohesively and who doesn’t want an “off-the-rack” lady pirate costume.
If you are new to piecing together a pirate costume from separate clothing pieces and accessories, you first have to decide on the historical era of piracy you wish to portray, the gender you wish to play, or if you want to put together a fantasy pirate costume. If you don’t yet know, then have a look at the pirate skirts and the gypsy skirts I have selected to feature and they may inspire your gypsy pirate creativity.
The women involved with pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy (1620 to 1720) mostly wore layered skirts with their tops, and some were quite flamboyant. However, if the woman was a pirate she would usually have worn men’s pants. She would have been passing as a male pirate to become a member of the all-male crew. During that time period, women were not allowed aboard ship as crew, and many Captains didn’t even want them on board as passengers. You see, women were considered to be bad luck.
With that being said, there were women pirates in history who ran fleets of ships. These women were considered to be more vicious, ruthless, and bloodthirsty than any male pirate could ever strive to be.
Pirate women were mostly the women involved with pirates in the brothels, taverns, and shops, as well as lovers. Gypsy fortune tellers and voodoo priestesses of the Caribbean were kept close, by many a scallywag pirate.

There is a fuzzy line between the difference in the skirts labeled pirate skirt and gypsy skirts. There really isn’t a lot of difference, except that some gypsy skirts may be more flamboyant in colors and flounce. Otherwise, they are all full, gathered skirts in a variety of styles and colors making them interchangeable from one costume to the next. Additionally, some of the skirts make fabulous Renaissance and Medieval costume skirts.
A historically accurate period pirate skirt. It comes with a separate apron piece which ties on the sides. These types of skirts were worn by women during the Middle Ages though the Renaissance period and into the Victorian era by peasant and lower class working women. The overlay apron skirt was used as a modern apron is used today; protecting the clothing underneath from dirt and grime. Additionally, the overlay apron was used like modern hot pads, by protecting hands from hot ovens; as baskets, carrying produce harvested from the garden; as kitchen towels, wiping up spills and dirty faces of children; as bar rags, wiping counters and tables; among just a few of its uses.
A pirate tavern wench would have worn this type of pirate skirt when serving pints of grog and bottles of rum to the pirates seeking services while in port. The skirt can be used for many different events such as Pirate Festivals, Ren Fairs, Re-enactment events, and of course, we mustn’t forget the Halloween pirate wench costume.
Historically acurate, these pirate peasant double layer Medieval Renaissance skirts can be worn multiple ways. Leave both skirts down, or pull on the skirt ties on the sides of the top overlay skirt to hike the skirt up on one side or both. The ties are hidden in the side seams. The contrasting bright colors of the dual layers give an attractive look to these skirts. Wear them with a chemise, for authenticy, or with a peasant style lady’s pirate blouse. Finish the costume with a waist cincher, a laced bodice or corset, a fabulous pair of lady pirate boots and a pirate hat or head scarf.
The truely great thing about this pirate skirt is the ability to converted it into billowy pirate pants. Lots of legroom to scramble up the main mast to unfurl the ship’s sails. They are a fabulous costume piece if playing the part of a famous woman pirate such as Jeanne de Clisson, Anne Bonny, or Mary Read. When you need to be a male pirate just button up the buttons to convert the skirt into pants.
Snap the hem closed for a super comfy gypsy boho pair of pants or unsnap and wear it as a layered pirate skirt. Either way they are comfortable, cool, and light-weight with a casual appeal even as modern day street clothing.
Gypsy Pirate Lagenlook Skirts
Lagenlook comes from the German “layered look” and has been a popular style in Europe since the Medieval period and continues today. Isn’t it amazing how one style can continue on through centuries? The layering styles have of course changed over the centuries, but originally began out of necessity. As the old saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention“.
Women’s Italian Lagenlook Linen 2-Slit Pocket Maxi Skirts
Incredibley versitile, I think these lagenlook gypsy skirts are a great asset to any costume wardrobe. They can be worn for so many different time periods, including modern day fashion. The waist is elasticated and they have two front slit pockets. The hems are a parachute, asymmetrical cut giving the skirts drape, a super cool, quirky effect.
These skirts are available in a total of 10 different colors including the four colors featured above. All of the skirts are linen. Don’t be afraid. Linen is very easy to care for.
Wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle. Dry it in a dryer on a low temperature unless you are planning to be close by for 15 minutes. In that case, you can dry it on a higher temperature, but you must remove the skirt immediately as soon as it is almost completely dry. This will prevent wrinkles.
Handmade cotton skirts from India are almost like wearing pants. They are casual and comfortable enough to wear as a pirate deckhand. Pair them up with a striped crew t-shirt. Tie a bandana head scarf around your head and top with an Anne Bonny style tricorner hat. Wear with pirate boots or beach sandals for a casual woman pirate deckhand costume.
Light-weight with a feel of breezy gauze, these lagenlook full-length paneled gypsy skirts are a blend of cotton and silk with a viscose lining and elastane waistband. They make excellent gypsy or pirate skirts. The hems are an asymmetrical hankerchief cut giving the skirts a fluid drape.
I recommend handwashing the first time in cold water to set the dyes and prevent them from running. I like to add a cup of white vinegar mixed with 2 teaspoons of salt to the wash water, and then a 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse water to set the dyes.

Women’s Pirate Wench Stripe Costume Skirts
Ahoy Thar Matey! Here be a fine collection of striped pirate wench skirts. Skirts a wench can wear to belly-up to da bar fer another tankard of ale. Arggh!
A prime example of just one of the striped costume skirts worn by Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie in the pirate Starz cable TV show, Black Sails. The Eleanor Guthrie character was based on the historical Guthrie clan. They were wealthy Scott merchants who made a fortune off of the pirates in the Carribean during the Golden Age of Piracy. Eleanor is a saloon and brothel owner on Providence Island.
Black Sails was loosely based on historical records of the pirates living on Nassau Island in the Bahamas around the early 18th century. The show featured Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rackham (Calico Jack), Charles Vane, Ned Low, Israel Hands, and Edward Teach (Blackbeard). Fictional characters from Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, Treasure Island, were also peppered into the series. These characters included Captain James Flint, Long John Silver, and Captain William Bones (Billy Bones).
I am featuring several different styles of striped linen and cotton skirts for your pirate costume creations.
The custom skirts can be tailored to fit your measurements in any length you might like. Just be sure to have someone measure your frame accurately and be sure to allow room for movement. I have found it can help to measure a skirt that already fits you well and go from there.
Women’s Striped High Waist Button Front Slit Ankle-Length Skirts
The most prefered fabric for European peasants during this timeline in history was linen. Linen was woven from fibers spun from the flax plant and was plentiful. Cotton was a fiber only affordable by the wealthy as it had to be transported into Europe from other countries. Egypt was one such country and later on, the Americas. Historically correct, this striped panel linen skirt is one which would have been worn by women in the pirate trade of the 17th century. However, it is a thick linen and cotton blend that can be worn regardless of the season. The skirt has side pockets, which in my book is a big plus. I hate not having pockets in skirts!
I recommend wearing the skirt over a ruffled petticoat or chemise for added fullness. Otherwise, the skirt will just hang limp.
A two-in-one pirate skirt! Wear it to a Ren Fest or a Pirate Fair with a white or black pirate blouse and a matching paisley bandana. And don’t forget a large pair of gold or silver hoop earrings. After the Pirate Festival, take off the rest of your costume and pull up the smocked waist of the skirt to wear as a tube top beach dress. How cool is that? Party on! Women’s Pirate Medieval Renaissance Skirts
Full, long skirts are the way to go for a pirate wench costume. With the addition of an asymetrical overlay skirt (found below), your costume becomes a more authentic period costume with a bit of pirate flair.
The Eleanor Pirate Skirts, made by the ToBeAPirate Company, are made of a heavier weight glazed cotton, or what we use to call sateen. Am I showing my old age with that one? LOL. The fabric is going to be shinier than a plain cotton peasant skirt would be. I recommend wearing these skirts (see 5 more colors below) with either a Medieval Renaissance chemise (for a more authentic historical costume) or a pirate blouse under a lace up bodice or a gorgeous satin brocade or silk corset. Be a pirate queen with the more elegant corset. Don’t forget to top your head with a fabulous pirate hat!
I for one, appreciate having pockets in a costume skirt! I like carrying a leather pouch accessory, but I also like to wear a skirt with pockets. . . just incase. These linen-cotton blend skirts are embroidered with a delicate pattern so typical of an expensive linen weave from this historical time period. They are a well-made skirt perfect for a lady pirate wench.
Grace O’Malley was a female pirate in the 1500s and probably the most notorious woman on all the coasts of Ireland. She was a female rebel, a political activist, and the matriarch of her families large landholdings and wealth. She was commonly known by her Gaelic name, Gráinne Mhaol (anglicised as Granuaile) in Irish folklore, and she is considered to be a famous historical figure in 16th-century Irish history.

These skirts are examples of skirts she may have worn when out at sea on one of her fleets ships or at home on one of her estates. They are a crepe fabric making them a step up from a cotton or linen peasant skirt.
Women Pirate’s Full Ruffled Long-Length Gypsy Peasant Skirts
Versatile full, flowy, ruffled pirate skirts can be worn with many costume changes. Be a pirate, a gypsy, a flameco dancer, or a Renaissance pub wench. The ideas and timelines are only limited by your imagination.
Women’s Full Crinkled Rayon 3-Tiered Pirate Skirts

You will find any of these lightweight summer cotton skirts are perfect for all summer activities including summer pirate festivals, Renaissance Faires, and summer reenactment events. The skirts are full, flowing, and breezy 7-tiered gathered skirts with a lovely drape.
The skirt length is long and meant for taller women, 5’4″ and above. Short women can wear higher heels and be fine. Otherwise, petite women will have to do some alterations by either hemming up the skirt, leaving a shorter ruffle at the hem, or removing the bottom tier entirely. Naturally, it will depend on your height as to how much fabric needs to be removed. I am featuring similar, shorter length skirts for petite women below here.
Another option is to cut off the elastic waistline at the top and create an entirely new waistband. Unless you sew yourself, this might not be cost effective for an inexpensive skirt. My recommendation for really petite women, is to get a different skirt in a petite size.
Women’s Ruffled 5-Tiered Full Circle Long Cotton Skirts
This frilly Medieval pirate skirt is five-tiers of heavy, rich, and thick black rayon fabric ruffles. These are such fun handkerchief hem pirate skirts! The pictures don’t do them justice. Any one of these asymmetric handkerchief hem skirts feature above and below from GothikShop will be great to wear as a Caribbean pirate or a fortune telling gypsy. The pointed hems are fabulous for women who want to take the focus away from their hips and thighs as the long tips pull the eyes to the hem of the skirt and the pirate boots being worn. Regardless of your body type they are fun skirts to wear and give the illusion of a woman who has spent a great deal of time at sea; thus hems a bit raggedy.
The skirt above looks purple on my computer screen but the description says it is maroon. I have not ordered this skirt myself so I do not know for sure. I would count on it being maroon and not purple.

Pirate Gypsy Embroidered Front Laced Asymmetrical Hem Ankle-Length Skirts

Lady Pirate Gypsy Overlay Skirts
Adding a short overlay skirt is a fabulous addition on top of a full skirt. It adds functionality, historical interest, and morn day style to the skirt. Layer one or two of these asymmetrical zig-zag hemline skirts in contrasting colors for an interesting layered pirate look. I am featuring several different lengths and designs you can layer, from short thigh-length to a longer, below the knee calf-length.
Pirate Women’s Tie-On Satin and Lace 3-Tier Swallowtail Overlay Skirts
The satin and lace overlay skirts featured above are 3-tiers of satin and lace. They tie in the front with a swallowtail split cut in the back. Wear them over a pirate skirt or a pair of leggings with thigh-high pirate boots.

Women’s Chiffon Fantasy Pirate Skirts
Delicate and feminine chiffon fantasy pirate skirts. Wear them with a sexy long sleeve crop top or a flowy full sleeve pirate blouse. Less expensive than the high-quality chiffon skirt collection featured above. The sheer chiffon of this skirt doesn’t match the quality of the denser chiffon of the first collection featured. If you need the skirt for a theater or a cosplay event, I wouldn’t recommend this skirt. I recommend the better quality skirts.
On the other hand, if you just need it for a 1-time Halloween event, then this skirt will be perfect at half the price!

Gypsy Women’s Gathered Pick Up Pirate Bohemian Ombré Petticoat Skirts
These unique skirts have large side pockets and are constructed with a lot of fabric. The manufaturers suggest getting a size smaller so your hips can manage the heavy weight of the cotton skirts.
A super cute embroidered pirate beach skirt with a brown coconut wood buckle. Wear it to the Pirate Festival then head to the beach and wear it as a beach cover-up. The smocked elastic waistband allows a lot of leeway and the wrap buckle has adjustable straps.

The skirts are all handmade and hand dyed cotton. I recommend washing the one you purchase for the first time in cold water with a cup of white vinegar mixed with 2 teaspoons of salt, prior to wearing. This will set the dye and keep it from running, just in case. Once the dye is set, the second washing can be with other clothing of like colors in cold water.
I also recommend removing the skirt from the dryer while it is still damp and hanging to dry the rest of the way. If you want, you could press it while it is still damp. Remember, it is cotton and we don’t want it to shrink too much.
Women’s Gypsy-Pirate Ruffled 5-Tiered Peasant Costume Long Cotton Skirts
Not as much fabric and about half the cost of the 25 yard gypsy skirts featured above, however, they are still nice full circle skirts. They come with five ruffled tiers with approximately 8 yards of lightweight cotton fabric. Perfect for summer festivals, the skirts are light and breezy. They are lined with a knee-length cotton inner skirt to prevent see-through.
These skirts are perfect for petite, short women 5’3″ and under. On anyone taller, the skirt will be ankle-length or shorter depending on your height. It is not a skirt for large women either, however, I am featuring plus size skirts (fits up to 4X) above here and skirts for taller women above here. Additionally, many of the other full tiered skirts go up to a size 18.
There are a total of 23 colors available. I am only featuring 6 of the colors. Some of the colors are vibrant jewel-tones and others are subtle pastels. Petite women will love all of the choices.

The pirate skirts featured in this section are sure to make an impression. They are made of richer fabrics to be worn by a woman who rules her ship and crew with elegant dignity.
Please Note: Keep in mind these skirts are inexpensive costume skirts. They cannot be washed or dried in a machine as they will fall apart. Dry clean only if you want to wear the skirt more than once. Additionally, the sizing is on the smaller size so you should order one size up. Use the vendor size chart and NOT Amazon’s size chart.
Some of the skirts are on Amazon Prime, but not all. With the Prime skirts, you’ll have no problem returning or exchanging for a corrected size. With the non-Prime skirts, the shipping is free, but you should check with the seller about returns prior to ordering.
Lastly, If you are on the shorter side, below 5’5″, the skirts will be ankle-length. On the taller side, about 5’5″ and above, the skirts will be shorter. In which case, you may want to add length to the skirt by attaching a decorative hem or by wearing the skirt as an overlay to another skirt. An altered skirt is non-refundable.
