Do you know how the Mad Hatter got his orange colored hair? I mean, after all, they didn’t have bright orangy red hair dye in the Victorian days now did they? Nor, was it a natural hair color. Imagine Johnny Depp tip-toeing around the movie set with natural orange hair. Pretty wild, huh?
I did a bit of investigative research. I discovered hat-makers during the Victorian era, used a mercurous nitrate solution. This solution turned fur and felt into a finished hat. The solution was bright orange and carroting is the name of the process. Makes sense doesn’t it?
The solution poisoned hatters with mercury, causing them to have terrible tremors and to go mad! The tremors, believe it or not, were called “mad hatter’s shakes”. It’s a reasonable explanation for the carrot red hair too. Thank goodness, no one has to go through that process anymore! Today, we have a simple alternative to get the carrot orange hair for a Mad Hatter costume. A carrot top wig, of course!

A replicated wild straggly orange Mad Hatter wig is made for cosplay events by the Ezcosplay Company in China. It is made from a heat resistant fiber. What that means is you cannot use a hot curling iron on it. If it needs to be washed it should be done very gently and allowed to air dry on a wig stand. Incidently, the best costume wigs are resistant to high temperatures. These can be dried by blow drying or by using a curling iron gently.
