You’ll go madder than a Mad Hatter, in fact you’ll go comepletely bonkers wearing this high-quality hat. A deluxe top hat made of a brown faux suede fabric accented with a brown and gold paisley design. Included are all the hat accessories: The hat pins, 4 in all decorated with faux jewels; the red hat scarf, wrapped around the base of the hat; a green peacock feather, which sticks up in the hat; a red, white, and blue striped patch. It’s one small fault is it does seem to be missing the “10/6” price tag (the asking price for the Hatter’s hat is 10 shillings and a sixpence) so I suggest adding that extra little detail.
This next photo is a really great example of the accents that can be added onto a Hatter’s hat. The handmade hat can be purchased on Etsy for $79.00, plus stax and shipping, or you can try your hand at adding your own accent pieces at home. Notice the 10/6 price tag on her hat. It is quite easy to create this type of price tag to place on any Mad Hatter ready made hat that is missing the 10/6 price tag.

Replicated from the Disney Tim Burton Alice Through the Looking Glass film, this hat is another “one size fits all”, which naturally, we know not everyone has the same size head! With a wig and perhaps a bandana, for extra padding under the hat, it should work for people with smaller heads. For people with medium size heads it should fit great, but I think it will be tight fit on folks with larger heads, especially with a full wig. In addition, the hat is a bit floppy on the top, but one reviewer solved the problem by stuffing it full of plastic bags. Great idea! The wig is NOT included but may be purchased separately below.

An inexpensive Mad Hatter hat created as a Johnny Depp replica. The sizing is questionable stating it is a large, one size hat. Be sure to measure your head to compare the measurements and remember to give leeway if wearing a wig. It does state there is a velcro hat adjuster, but I do not know how well it works.
Now that we have the cons out of the way, the pro about this hat is that it does look great if going after the Johny Depp look from the Disney, Tim Burton films, Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
The Mad Hatter hat is constructed with a lovely detailed print taffeta fabric befitting a hatter who’s completely bonkers. If you’re not entirely bonkers yet, you will be once you don this hat. “But I’ll tell you a secret… All the best people are.” The hat accessories include the infamous 10/6 price tag, an imitation peacock feather, a striped patch applique, and a gold tassel hat scarf. Personally, I prefer using a wig for this particular costume for a more authentic look. However, some people are not comfortable wearing a wig so the costume industry created hats with attached hair to give the illusion of wearing a wig. Sometimes they work well and sometimes they don’t. It all depends on the amount of faux hair is glued into the hat. If the hair is thin, you won’t be able to pull off the Mad Hatter look successfully. I have selected two hats with hair to feature here, which I think have enough fake hair to look like actual carrot colored Mad Hatter hair worn by Johnny Depp.

The Disney replicated hat featured above left, has the same detailing included as the hairless hat shown above in the Hat Section. It includes the price tag, the striped patch applique, the faux peacock feather and the tasseled scarf hatband. It also has a size adjuster on the inside hatband, but hat pins are NOT included. You may, however, purchase them separately below, where 2 sets are featured.
The Mad Hatter Hat with Hair featured above right has lots of carrot-colored fluffy hair attach to the hat, but when it arrives it may be a bit flat from packing. If it is, set it on a wig stand or something similar and fluff it out with a hair pick. It also comes with a longer peacock feather than the other hats.

This is a replication of the bow tie worn in the Alice in Wonderland Tim Burton film. The tie is made of a silky poly/rayon. A versitile piece which can be used as a costume accessory for a variety of different costumes, not just for the Mad Hatter. For example, a sash on a gypsy skirt or a dance costume; a bow tie on an Easter Bunny costume; or as a bow tie on a Victorian Man Christmas Caroler costume.
Hatter’s Thread Spools Bandolier Shoulder Belt
This is just an OK costume piece for anyone who doesn’t have the time to make accessories at home, but the spools are plastic, they don’t look like the image (more like serger spools) and the chain is not very strong.
I am a semi-homemade kind of person anyway and figured it might just work better to make one rather than buy one as I had a lot of half-empty old wooden spools of thread. What we did, was use an old bicycle chain (we got for free from a friend) screws, and washers to bolt the spools of thread onto the chain. We got our idea from this next video. I have started the video at the relevant part so you don’t have to sit through the beginning of the video if you don’t want to.

This bandolier looks like it is made much better than the first one we featured but looks can be deceiving and I did not buy this one myself. So I have no way of knowing for sure. The plus side is that it cost about the same as the first one. If you don’t have the items I had for free and you have to purchase them at a hardware store, then then it could cost more than it cost to make one, if you have to buy a chain and the hardware at a hardware store. So, there are 3 options. I hope one of them works for you.

Some of the Mad Hatter’s costume coats do not come with this bird patch stitched on. If you want a more authentic Alice Through the Looking Glass costume coat, you can get this patch and stitch it onto the coat yourself. I recommend using a satin stitch on your sewing machine and stiching over the edges rather than using a straight stitch. Match the gold thread as close as possible to the embroidery on the patch.

Mad Hatter Safety Pin Ribbon Accessory
I looked high and low for this Ribbon Pin Accessory and could not find one anywhere. No biggie! Make one at home with a large stainless steel safety pin and a variety of ribbon strands in the colors matching the image. Don’t worry if you can find the exact ribbon colors. No one will care and few will realize the difference!
In the Tim Burton films, the Mad Hatter had a wide variety of costume changes. On one of his costumes, he had a fabric tape measure hanging from his safety pin, along with colorful draping ribbons and braid trim. Use your imagination when you create your Ribbon Pin Accessory. There are other accessories you can “create” at home. Do you remember the pack of scissors and dress pins the Mad Hatter carried in a leather case (and I use the word case loosely)? They were safety pinned to the outside of his pants? During the battle scene, they were safety pinned to his vest. And don’t forget the finger thimbles! Sometimes he wore 6 of them on his fingers and other times he was seen wearing only 2 thimbles.
