Wearing fabulous boots and shoes like the footwear worn by the assassin’s from the Assassin’s Creed video games are the right way to go. When creating an authentic looking character to wear a cosplay, Renaissance Faire, theater production, or a Halloween event your footwear is a necessary accessory.
Creating a fabulous Assassin’s Creed costume is all about the details and where hats and headwear are the “icing on the cake” of a costume, the footwear is just as important. When creating a historically correct period costume, the real boots and shoes are just as import as the headwear for the overall accuracy of the historical outfit.
I abhor plastic boot covers! The are always made of vinyl and they look tacky and fake when worn over a pair of modern day street shoes. They do nothing to authenticate a period costume and all of the Assassin’s Creed characters are fashion after historical figures. If you want to take your costume from ordinary to over-the-top extraordinary, then by all means invest in a pair of boots or period shoes.

Kenway is a pirate captain turned Assassin, grandfather of Connor, and father of Haytham Kenway of Assassin’s Creed III.

All three of these tall, over the knee, pairs of boot are ideal choices to wear with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag costumes, but keep them in your costume wardrobe as they are versatile boots. Wear them again with a Renaissance, Medieval, Pirate, Robin Hood, Gypsy, Muskateer, King’s Guard, Revolutionary War, and Huntsmen costume too.
The black pair of boots featured above left, and the brown pair of boots featured above center, are the same tall, over the knee style, but they are NOT made of real leather. They are perfect for the vegan and animal activist costumes as they are both made of synthetic leather.
The black pair featured on the right are the pair I prefer to wear when I create a historically correct costume. They look the same as the other two faux leather pairs but they are made of genuine leather! During the timelines of Assassin’s Creed, only real leather footwear was worn. Synthetics had not yet been invented.
Real leather boots will last much longer than faux leather boots. Personally, I am against wearing vinyl as it is a petroleum based product that takes more fossil fuel energy to fabricate. I am a firm believer in wearing the leather that comes from the animals we are already using for our food.
What I do to extend the wear of real leather boots is to take them to a cobbler, or a boot repair shop, to replace the soles and the heels as they wear out. I can make a pair of genuine leather boots last between 10 to 15 years, or sometimes even longer just by taking care of them properly.
