Women’s Double-Layer Medieval Renaissance Peasant Skirts
Table of Contents
Often, during the Medieval and Renaissance Eras, peasant women wore two or three layers of gathered skirts. The top skirt functioned like an apron and as a cover protector against the elements for the underskirts. If the women needed to present herself in a “clean” outfit, she could remove the top layer “apron” skirt and have the cleaner one underneath to wear in public.
The third layer was her chemise undergarment which was usually, but not always, a complete dress which served as both a blouse and an underskirt.
For working peasant women, the outer apron skirt was functional in that she could use it to wipe her dirty hands or as a basket to carry things. For example, she could gather up her top skirt and fill it with feed to feed the chickens or to carry the eggs from the hen house back to the kitchen.

For a very afforadable price you get a nice looking cotton blend, easy care, layered Renaissance skirt. The 2-layers are attached at the elastic waistline. The top layer is an attractive asymmetrical burgundy piece and the bottom black layer has a ruffled hem. The first time you wash it, I recommend washing it in cold water on a gentle cycle just to be sure the colors do not run. Adding a 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the wash will set the colors.
