Medieval Renaissance Peasant Pants

Medieval Renaissance
Men’s Breeches

A man needs a pair of Medieval Renaissance breeches, or pants, to complete his Medieval costume. Naturally, that goes without saying, after all, you can’t go outdoors without your pants on.

Here at Deluxe Adult Costumes, I have selected men’s breeches, trousers, pants, and hose in every style worn by men during the Medieval and Renaissance eras. I am featuring breeches in both knee length and ankle length. We also have every color and size to fit any man looking for pants to finish his Medieval or Renaissance time period costume.

During Medieval times when men wore mostly tunics, they wore breeches under their tunics which were shortened to mid-thigh with ties or buttons at the knees to adjust for a more comfortable fit.

They also wore knee-high stockings, made of leather or linen, that covered the lower part of the breeches. Atop the stockings, strips of cloth, linen, or leather were worn which started at the ankle and ended just below the knee, crisscrossing each other like lacings on a sandal, to keep the stockings in place.

Peasants were more apt to use strips of linen as the most affordable legging ties while the noble’s used leather. Stockings or hose with whole feet did not come about until the 13th century.

Medieval Renaissance Men’s
Knee Length Breeches

Aristocrates generally wore knee length breeches over hose, or trunkhose as they were called then, with regular street shoes. Peasants, on the other hand, wore their knee length breeches with leg wrappings. It was more economically feasible for the wrappings to be fashioned out of scaps leftover from materials used when handcrafting other articles of clothing for the royals and nobles.

Men’s Medieval Braies Trouser Pants

Men's Medieval Braies Trouser Pants - DeluxeAdultCostumes.comMen’s Medieval Braies Trouser PantsClick Here for Details

Breeches, during the Medieval period, were generally called braies or trewes. They varied in the tightness of fit, in the length of the leg, by the time period, the social classes, and the geography. In Europe, braies were worn as both under and outer garments while trews were strictly outerwear breeches.

These trouser pants are easy care polyester pants. I can’t vouch for them as we have never purchased them ourselves. We haven’t been interest in this style because they are not historically correct. Elastic is used in both the waist and at the knees, they do not have pockets, and they are made of polyester which of course is a manmade fabric not available way back when. With that being said elastic does make for comfort!

From what I have gathered from the reviews by Amazon customers, they run small and they recommend purchasing a size larger than what you would normally wear. If you need something inexpensive that you won’t need to wear over and over for many costume changes, then this brand is for you.

These next knee length pants are also inexpensive, easy care polyester, but we like them better and might try out a pair ourselves. We like them better as they are actually made better (more fabric actually hemmed around the elastic waist) they are made in the USA, and they have pockets.

These knee-length knicker costume pants are avaiable in 5 colors. Red and yellow are also available. They are made in the USA from an easy care polyester. They have side pockets, and an elastic waist and knees. You will get lots of uses for these pants. They can be worn with many different costume types such as Peter Pan, Papa Smurf, Colonial man, or Pirate, just to name a few.

Remember that knee length pants are not meant to tuck into boots. You will need mid-calf or ankle length pants to tuck into boots. Knee length are meant to wear bared legged, over hose (tights) or with knee high stockings and street shoes.

In the late 1300s and early 1400s, it became commonplace among the men of the noble and knightly classes to connect hose directly to their pourpoints or gambesons, and later to their doublets, rather than to their drawers. A male sex-organ cover, or a codpiece, was attached to the pants by an independently buttoned front panel. It was introduced by tailors to preserve modesty and to protect men’s genitals. They then joined skin-tight hose, what we call tights today, back into their breeches.

Medieval Renaissance Men’s
Full Length Breeches

Full length trousers, such as the pants I am featuring next, were most often worn tucked into a pair of boots during the Renaissance. These types of pants were usually worn by peasants, gaurdsmen, musketeers, and warriors who needed more leg coverage than the genteel aristocrats. The aristocrats dressed in what modern men consider to be very effeminate clothing styles. The aristocrats favored wearing tight hose with very short gambesons and fitted short doublets.

Open leg lace-up trousers were worn by Norman soldiers and French swordsmen during the Renaissance, although they were more often made of leather. These lace up pants are good for costumes, but not for reenactments, as they will not be able to handle the stress of a lot of action movement. The pants are very reasonably priced, and made of a poly-rayon fabric, which is a very light silky fabric. They are more of a walk around and look hot type of costume pants. They are meant to be tight fitting, but they do run small so order a size larger. Use the sizing chart provided by the vendor and not the Amazon chart

Men’s Renaissance Black Open Leg Lace-Up Pants - DeluxeAdultCostumes.comMen’s Renaissance Black Open Leg Lace-Up PantsClick Here for Details

This pair of open leg lace-up trousers are a higher quality of rayon fabric than the brown and green lace up pants featured above. They are made of viscose rayon material which is more durable than the poly-rayon, as viscose has bamboo fibers mixed in. They are still a silky lightweight fabric that will not withstand a lot of stress. Viscose has a much nicer drape than poly-rayons and has a thicker feel to it. These pants should be worn tucked into a pair of good leather thigh-high boots.

These type of pants were most likely worn by swordsmen from the Ottoman Empire and the Bosnia & Herzegovina regions of Eastern Europe from the 14th-century through the 16th-century. In Turkey they were called şalvar or shalwar kameez and were worn tucked into leather boots with turned up toes or felt sock style boots. The blousey style of the pants allowed for movement on horseback and in hand-to-hand combat on the ground.

This pair of swordsmen pants is handmade of a rich rayon viscose fabric. The fabric is lightweight, silky and durable, but is still not strong enough to withstand a lot of stressful action.

These pants are very affordable, and made of a very light and silky poly-rayon fabric. They are fashioned after gaurdsmen pants from the Ottoman Empire during the 14-, 15-, and 16-centuries. The loose, blousey style allowed for freedom of movement during combat, but they do run small so order a size larger. Use the sizing chart provided by the vendor and not the Amazon sizing chart.

In Turkey and Greece, breeches were extremely roomy and were tucked inside tall leather knee-high boots with curved toes. They were designed to allow for unrestricted movement on horseback, fishing boats and sailing ships. They were usually accompanied by a long, wide sash of cloth turned many times around the waist as a belt. The breeches were often closed at the cuff with ties or buttons.

Men’s European ‘Landsknecht’
Renaissance Pants

During the late 15th and early 16th century in Europe, German mercenary pikeman soldiers called ‘Landsknecht’ were colorful foot soldiers who dressed elaborately in outfits which they adopted from the Swiss. They deliberately slashed at the cloth on the front, back and sleeves of their clothing. Undershirts of contrasting colors were then pulled through the slits to form puffs, thence puffed and slashed. Their outfits also included particolored hose; doublets; broad flat beret-style hats with tall feather plumes; and broad flat shoes.

The Swiss-German-Austrian noblemen, of this era, wore “trunk hose” which are the puffy onion shaped garment commonly seen in paintings of this era. The trunk hose had slashes, or panes, often of a contrasting colored fabric underneath. The trunk hose fit a man from his waist to his knees, although they have been seen both shorter, ending at the hips, and longer, ending at the ankles. All pants fastened with ties or button closures were then referred to as trunk hose. Hosen, later to be called hose in other countries and what we call tights today, were often attached to the trunk hose.

Landsknecht – German Mercenary Fashions Renaissance Faire Video

Men’s Renaissance Hose

By the end of the 15th century, the rising hemlines worn by the most fashionable and wealthy noblemen at court, led to briefer trewes until they disappeared altogether. The noblemen wore revealing hose with an open crotch and separate legs leaving the men’s genitals exposed for all to view when sitting or when mounting a horse. The clergy condemned this indecent and lewd display of the male genitalia, so elaborately shaped and padded codpieces were designed to cover and protect, and the larger and more outrageous the protruding member the better. =D
