The History of English Caroling

 
Christmas caroling is an event steeped in tradition since the days long before the birth of Christ. They were part of the old Pagan religion and were sung to celebrate life in all four seasons.

The earliest carols sung in Europe about the Nativity were written in the 13th and 14th-centuries. Unfortunately, only a minute fragment of these carols are still in existence. Most of the Christmas carols written during that time, and during the Elizabethan period, are fictitious tales poetically based on the Christian nativity story. These carols were looked upon as entertainment and not as religious hymnals. At that time, carols were sung in homes and not in churches! Traveling minstrels and bards began singing these carols as they traveled across Europe, changing the words in each region they visited. They changed the words of the songs to adapt to the local area they were visiting.
 

In 1649, when the Puritans and Oliver Cromwell took English rule away from the monarchy, they also put an end to celebrating Christmas and singing Christmas carols. The Puritans believed they were pagan rituals and had no place in the church. The carols were only able to survive because people continued to sing and celebrate Christmas in the secrecy of their homes.

It wasn’t until the Victorian era when William Sandys and Davis Gilbert decided to record these old Christmas carols as historical records. They went about collecting these old pieces of Christmas music from the villages throughout the English countryside. The Christmas caroling that we think of today we associate with the era of Charles Dickens during the rule of Queen Victoria of England. The people wanted to celebrate Christmas and sing Christmas carols. Queen Victoria agreed. In fact, her husband Albert brought the custom of decorating a Christmas tree into England from Germany.
 

Celebrating a Victorian Christmas in the USA

There are many towns across the United States that turn into Victorian English villages during the Christmas season. They take a step back into time and devote themselves from a weekend to a full week towards celebrating Christmas as it was celebrated back then.

The whole town is decorated like a Victorian England village. Kettle corn, hot chocolate, eggnog, candy apples, hot cross buns, and chestnuts roasted over open fires are served on the streets. Traditional Victorian Christmas meals are prepared in restaurants with classic English cocktails served in the pubs. Craft booths, food booths, and confection booths are available. Horse-drawn carriage rides are provided, and Santa makes an appearance with a sleigh drawn by real live reindeer. Often Christmas Tree Lighting, Yule Log Ceremonies, and Dickens costumed balls are provided as part of the festivities. Everyone dresses in Victorian costumes, and carolers walk the streets like minstrels singing Christmas carols. It is a festive time to be enjoyed by all!

One of our favorites is a train ride or plane ride away to the Holly Dickens Festival in the town of Holly, Michigan. No matter where we are we like to return when we can for the 3-week event.

Tabi’s costumes are all high-quality theater costumes made in the USA. They were originally out of Hollywood, CA, but have sold their business to Creative Costuming on the East Coast. Their quality is still the high quality we all came to love from Tabi’s. They only use the best quality fabrics in the creation of the costumes.

The taffeta capes of these caroler dresses are reversible. The inside of the cape is the same plaid taffeta as the dress print. The red and green print taffeta skirts are accented with contrasting piping. Included with the costumes are white faux fur muffs and velvet hats. Each costume is a 4-piece ensemble. A Victorian blouse is not included but may be purchased separately below.

Anyone of these Victorian-style ruffled blouses can be worn with the women’s caroling costume skirts featured on this page. They are beautifully made. Order a size larger for the black and white blouses as they do tend to run a bit small.

Made in the USA, these 4-piece Victorian women’s caroler costumes are professional theater quality costumes. They are available in either green or maroon high-quality cotton velvet. The reversible costume capes and the skirts are trimmed in an elegant gold braid. Included with each costume are the cape, the full matching skirt, a velvet hat, and a white faux fur muff.

The white Victorian-style long-sleeve blouse is not included and will need to be purchased separately (see below). I also recommend buying a full crinoline petticoat or a hoop skirt to wear under the costume skirt to give it the fullness you see in the photos.

Not as well made as the Tabi professional theater costumes shown above, but an affordable nice looking Christmas caroler outfit, nevertheless. The fabric of the dress and capelet is flocked velvet (which is stiffer than real velvet) and is trimmed with white faux fur. The dark green skirt has a pretty Christmas plaid ruffled hem trimmed with lace. Included is a matching plaid bonnet trimmed with lace and a tulle petticoat.

To be a top of the line Christmas caroler in a Victorian Holiday Village, you need to love singing carols, have a mug of hot chocolate in hand, an infectious Christmas spirit, and of course the right caroling outfit! Oh sure, you could go out singing Christmas carols in ripped jeans, a Sherpa coat, and Sorel snow boots, but I have to ask, is that very festive? Not very! People love the nostalgia of seeing carolers from a bygone era as the snow gently falls around you. They want the warmth you bring with your presence, your voice, your music, and your brilliant smile.

This classic caroling outfit will take you back to Christmas eve dinner celebrations in the Victorian era along with our favorite classic Dickens Christmas Carol film. Included with this caroler outfit are a long, green and red tartan plaid skirt, a holly-red princess-cut peplum jacket with gold-tone buttons down the front, and a traditional little black velvet capelet lined with satin to keep the chill off your shoulder. Additionally, you’ll receive a red foam bonnet trimmed with matching plaid ribbon ties, a white faux fur muff lined with satin, and a pair of eyelet lace wrist cuffs.

Add your own sturdy boots and a warm pair of leather gloves (my favorite is a pair of rabbit fur-lined) and prepare to make everyone’s night jolly as St. Nick!

A terrific 6-piece caroler outfit. Included with this costume is a red jacket, a black velvet capelet, a plaid skirt, a black hat, a cream fleece muff, and a neck-tie ribbon. I do not like the cheaply made hat and recommend replacing it with one of the bonnets featured on this page.

You will definitely stand out when wearing one of these women’s plaid caroling costume outfits. All you will need to complete the look is a cape, a bonnet, and a petticoat to add fullness to the skirt. I recommend wearing a pair of Victorian-style boots (see below), and a pair of leather gloves to keep your hands warm.

This penne velvet costume does include the hat, the capelet, the full skirt, and the faux fur hand muff. I recommend getting a full petticoat to wear under the skirt. Otherwise, it will just hang like a drape without any fullness.

I recommend adding black Victorian accessories to pull these caroling gowns together. Add a black velvet cape, a black velvet hat, and black velvet Victorian ankle booties to complete the costume. Oh, and don’t forget the petticoats! You will have to wear them to achieve the look of full skirts.

The garments will need to be pressed out of the box as the packing causes the Victorian costume gowns to wrinkle. It is recommended to reinforce the velvet buttons with a few stitches as they may come loose.

The Victorian caroler gowns are satin with white cotton faux blouse sleeves attached to the main sleeves of the gown. The hem and sleeves are trimmed with black lace. Included with each gown is a white ruffled Victorian collar with a costume plastic cameo jewelry piece and a hoop skirt. You may want to replace the plastic cameo with an authentic or at least a better-quality costume piece.

I recommend wearing a black velvet cape and matching bonnet which can be purchased separately below.

Originally meant to be an Ebenezer Scrooge and a Jack the Ripper costumes, however, they both work equally as a 19th-century Victorian Dickens-style gentlemen’s outfit. They are both perfect for a gentleman to wear when out speading Christmas cheer singing Christmas carols. These costumes include a long black Victorian frock coat with brocade vests. The dress shirt, top hat, pants, and shoes are NOT included.

This gentlemen’s caroler costume is an inexpensive costume that will be fine for a one-time local stage production. However, it isn’t warm enough for actual outside caroling unless the costume is amended with warmer accessories. The pants shown are not included but I did find a Victorian pair (featured below) which is the perfect substitution.

What you do get in this set is a black jacket with a velvet collar and an attached thin black capelet, a plaid vest with gold-tone buttons down the front, an white ascot necktie, a brushed knit green flannel scarf, a 3-piece ready-to-assemble top hat with a matching plaid hatband and a holly hat clip.

The shoes, gloves, and book prop are not included either. I would use a pair of warm leather gloves for outside use and a knee-length wool cape to wear over the jacket. I don’t like the 3-piece hat either. I recommend replacing it with a wool top hat, especially if planning to go caroling outside in the cold.

Originally designed to be a Jack the Ripper costume by California Costumes, it is well-suited as a gentlemen’s caroling ensemble. It the classic look for an aristocrat Victorian era man to wear out at night. Made in the USA this set includes a black cloak with red trim, a matching vest, red and black print jabot, and black top hat. I recommend replacing the top hat with another better made hat as this one is too soft and floppy. One reviewer suggests saving the hat to use on a snowman outside this winter. The pants, cane, shoes, and glasses are not included.
